I am Changing

Has anyone come across this resource before?
I have had a quick look at it, it's seems to be a very comprehensive look at puberty.....very smart marketing by Libra.

In association with respected independent sexuality educators, Family Life & Interrelate Family Centres, Libra has developed a FREE downloadable puberty, health and relationship education program. Topics have been carefully selected and curriculum links fully updated so materials can be used as part of school health education programs in Australia and New Zealand.

Incidently, Family Life visited the region I live in last week. They ran a session on the reproductive system and babies for younger kids and then a session on puberty for older kids. Parents were also present at the sessions and a lot of interaction between kids and parents was encouraged during the night. The sessions were great. Famiy Life also have a bookstore, many of these books looked excellent - targeting kids and parents.

Can you give me some more info on the family life session they did?
What age was the young group? What age were the older kids. Did they mention or support same sex attracted young people? Was everything addressed to a hetero perspective?
    eg eg eg...

  2. Hi Lud,
    There were 2 sessions.
The first one was 6years to 9 years old. "Where do babies come from" was the theme. Explanation of the 2 reproductive systems including names of the main parts. Pregnacy, how it happens (intercourse and sperm/egg explanation), how the baby forms and labor. That was about it.
Second session was for kids 10 plus - puberty. It covered the basics with body changes and touched on emotional / social changes (but hardly). Periods. wet dreams. As the session didn't really touch on emotional / social it didn't allow for sexual diversity, time was probably a factor - a shame coz even if it was only one or sentences (e.g. not everyone is hetro, it's OK to be gay / lesbian etc). The only mention of SSA was in relation to wet dreams - boys can dream about other boys, and her quote was roughly "it doesn't mean that you are gay though" - which is true of course but it left it hanging there a bit....
I guess the thing I like most about it was the interaction she encouraged between YP and parent throughout the 2 sessions plus the encouragement for kids and parents to buy books and explore them together - and the books are GREAT!! The book list it on the website - you may have seen it. I would like to buy a heap for work.
