contraception teaching works??

I've long been a bekiever that somethung about the way we teach about contraception - or the forms of contraception need to change because the statisitcs about un wanted pregnancies, numbers of STIs etcetc keep rising Hhere is an article about " An expert in health services at The University of Nottingham is calling for urgent action to improve contraceptive advice and services to reduce the growing number of repeat teenage pregnancies in the United Kingdom. Using national abortion figures for England and Wales from 1991 to 2007, provided by the Office of National Statistics and Department of Health, researchers at Nottingham found that the number of women under 20 presenting for repeat abortions has risen steadily over the last 15 years.

The SAFRA Project

Hey everyone - Have look at this site. Thanks to Craig for passing it on.

The Safra Project is a resource project working on issues relating to lesbian, bisexual and/or transgender women who identify as Muslim religiously and/or culturally (Muslim LBT women). The Safra Project was set up in October 2001 by and for Muslim LBT women. The issues faced by Muslim LBT women, and the (combination of) prejudices based on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender, religion, race, culture and immigration status that they experience, are unique and currently insufficiently addressed.
The word Safra is related to the words for 'journey' and discovery' in many languages such as Arabic, Farsi and Urdu. The Safra Project does not seek to provide ultimate answers or solutions, and is not a faith group. Our ethos is one of inclusiveness and diversity.

Happy New Year

Thought whilst I was logged on I would wish everyone the best for 2009. It is going to be a big year for us here in Whyalla with several new projects getting under way.
I would also like to encourage those of you that havent had the chance to do either the face to face training or the new on line training to do so. Recently I completed the online training pilot and had a great time.
Lud is a great teacher and even puts up with the back of class stuff that I was involved in really well.

So in the words of some TV ad that I once saw " Do yourself a favour"

Goodluck
Jeremy

Great show on SBS

Not sure if anyone caught this show. It is called My Penis and Everyone Elses. It is a guy that discusses how different the penis is and how guys are so hung up on it. He is now collecting pictures of peoples penises and is going to have a photo exibit of them all.

Birth control Sabotage

I found this American site today entitled KNOW MORE. Know more about coercion, abuse, & birth control sabotage, and the consequences for our health.

I had never thought about men using violence against women in the form of tricking them into becoming pregnant;

Carollee's Story>
Carollee started dating a 32-year-old man when she was 19. She noticed that whole rows of pills would disappear. When Carollee called her boyfriend on the disappearing birth control, he responded that he “knew” she wanted to have his child.

Jessica's Story>
He threatened me when I asked to use birth control, and always refused to use condoms after we became exclusive. When we decided to continue the pregnancy and marry, the overt abuse started within days of our wedding…

Is this form of violence prevalent in Oz?

What would the reasons behind such abuse be?

They have an online poster which can be downloaded

Does any one know of any good on-line resources relating to healthy relationships? It's a topic I'm keen to explore this year. I would really like to find some creative ways to explore how young men can positively engage in their relationships with females and other males - love, respect, initmacy.

Headspace

Headspace have some TV and radio adverts and some posters on their website - worth a look.

One of the posters is this one;

Does this sound like a true statement?
Do males (young or old) take this kind of intimacy (his partner confiding in them) as an invitation for sex?
Does making love (in this case someone open their heart) and having (getting) sex get mixed up?
Do some males find this kind of intimacy too irresistable, can he not rein back his energy for the right or appropriate time?
Would this be a mis-use of sex?

sexy sweat

When a guy is aroused, his sweat activates the female brain, study reveals

The researchers speculated that if humans do produce and respond to sweat pheromones, then a woman should respond to a guy's sexual sweat differently than she does to his normal sweat.
Chen and her colleagues asked 20 heterosexual guys to stop wearing deodorant and scented products for a few days. Then they told the men to put small pads in their armpits as they watched pornographic videos and became aroused (the researchers confirmed, using electrodes, that the images did the job). Later, the guys were asked to exchange those pads for fresh pads to collect the sweat they produced when they weren't aroused.
Then the researchers recruited 19 brave women to smell the men's pads while undergoing brain scans.

lets get tested competition

Sexual health and HIV charity, Terrence Higgins Trust (THT), in partnership with Abbott, has launched an exciting new competition called Let's Get Tested. The competition, which closes on February 28th, aims to highlight the importance of sexual health by asking young people aged 15 - 25 to make a short film about getting regularly tested for HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

This is sooo cool and a great idea. Go here to have a look.

Gee - What a surprise

I wish we could come up with something more user friendly than condoms. Have a read of this study I found in Medical News Today

Eve Rose of Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health -- examined condom use among teenagers in an HIV prevention program. In the study, 186 young women ages 15 to 21 said that they used condoms every time they had sex in the previous two weeks. The participants also provided vaginal samples for sperm testing. Wetzstein writes, "With 100% condom use, there should have been zero sperm in the samples. But lab analysis showed that in a third of the samples (34%), some tiny soldiers sneaked in anyway." According to the study, the presence of sperm in the samples could have been the result of user error -- such condom breakage or late application -- and over-reporting of condom use.

2009 predictions

I found this while looking through Cory Silverbergs blog: Go and have a look - interesting and frightening.

"more personally managed sexual health services, more (untested and ineffective) sex drugs for women, more (unscientifically diagnosed) people with porn addictions, and more bisexuals. One other prediction of hers that I heartily agree with that the term “sex expert” will be replaced by the term “sex educator”. All sorts of completely unqualified people will tout themselves as sex educators "
