Abstinance Only research shows woops!

Here is what associated press article said about this research

Abstinence students still having sex
Study tracked 2,057 young people in government-funded programs

WASHINGTON - Students who participated in sexual abstinence programs were just as likely to have sex a few years later as those who did not, according to a long-awaited study mandated by Congress.
Also, those who attended one of the four abstinence classes reviewed reported having similar numbers of sexual partners as those who did not attend the classes, and they first had sex at about the same age as their control group counterparts — 14.9 years, according to Mathematica Policy Research Inc.
The federal government now spends about $176 million annually on abstinence-until-marriage education. Critics have repeatedly said they don’t believe the programs are working, and the study will give them reinforcement.

It would be interesting to know how much reienforcement made after thier initial education. How free or comfortable did these young people feel about talking about any confusion about these strange albeit natural feelings they were experiencing. If they are making these pledges when they are not in the throws of their confusion of their sexual desires. I think Abstenence pledges are a useful tool. However I think the most important key is continuing the conversations with young people. Giving them the freedom to doubt and to question. To do this I believe they need a trusted adult who will be honest, open and non judgemental with them.

    just my 2 cents worth!

  2. That is a good 2 cents worth.Whether or not a person believes in the idea of pledges we definately need to support young people in thier quest to find themselves and CONTINUE to support them. Not just throw them into programs and say'There all fixed'

Wish we had lots and lots of trusted non judgemental adults to go around.
