HOAX +HIV
It really makes me sad to see the sort of HOAX that some people are prepared to develop based on thier own fear and hatred of issues around sexual health. Below is an email HOAX that has been going around: Please read it and see it for the hate and fear mongering that it is. After you read it please read the response by SHineSA Coordinator of Medical Education - Katrina Allen
"Its a sick world we live in!!What a world we live in........A few weeks ago in a movie theatre in Melbourne a person sat on something that was poking out of one of the seats. When she got up to see what it was she found a needle sticking out Of the seat with a note attached saying a quote; 'You have just been infected by HIV' quote. The Disease control Centre in Melbourne reports many similar incidents have occurred in many other Australian cities recently. All tested needles are HIV Positive. The Centre also reports that needles have been found in the cash dispensers in ATMs. We ask everyone to use extreme caution when faced with this kind of situation. All public chairs/seats should be inspected with vigilance and caution before use.17 people have been tested positive in the Western suburbs alone in the last 2 months!!! A careful visual inspection should be enough. In addition they ask that each of you pass this message along to all members of your family and your friends of the potential danger. We all have to be careful at public places! This is very important.Just think about saving a life of someone even you don't know by forwarding this message. Please, take a few seconds of your time to pass it along.Australian Red Cross Blood ServicePh: (08) 94212877 Fax: (08)94212366 "
Dear all,
You can see from the exchange below this is a hoax, as we have already been notified.
I guess for me there is the important issue of the particular venom shown towards HIV infected people, which in our world feeds into homophobia and xenophobia (fear of strangers)/ racism. My experience of those who are HIV infected is that they are scrupulously careful to protect other people from the risk of infection even to the point of refusing attempts to stop bleeding until you can find some gloves.
The net is a wonderful thing but can inflame our fears as well as our joys (see extreme sheepherding - but you may need to do it at home as you need the music!)
Cheers Katrina

Pope Benidect speaks out against condom use!!
The following is taken from Medical News Today
Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday while heading to Yaounde, Cameroon, as part of a seven-day pilgrimage to Africa said that distributing condoms is not the answer to curbing the spread of HIV on the continent, the AP/Washington Post reports. "You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms," Benedict said, adding, "On the contrary, it increases the problem" (Simpson, AP/Washington Post, 3/18). According to Benedict, addressing HIV/AIDS will require a "two-fold" solution. He said, "The first is a humanization of sexuality, spiritual renewal which brings with it a new way of behaving ... secondly, a true friendship, especially for those who are suffering, a willingness to make personal sacrifices" (Ward, Toronto Star, 3/18).
What do you think? wheres the harm?
Certainly humanising sexuality sounds good. True friendship and making personal sacrifices sounds right. Soooo here is my question. WHY CANT THE POPE MAKE A PERSONAL SACRIFICE AND SUGGEST THAT CONDOMS CAN BE PART OF THE SOLUTION?

lets get tested competition
Sexual health and HIV charity, Terrence Higgins Trust (THT), in partnership with Abbott, has launched an exciting new competition called Let's Get Tested. The competition, which closes on February 28th, aims to highlight the importance of sexual health by asking young people aged 15 - 25 to make a short film about getting regularly tested for HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
This is sooo cool and a great idea. Go here to have a look.

Online HIV/AIDS course
This is a great basic online course for gaining knowl;edge re HIV/AIDS. It is easy to use and work through. It does require a reasonably high level of literacy but I really liked doing this. I got it from the youth infonet newsletter that regularly sends out recently developed program resources. Please have a look.
This on-line course is primarily designed for those who educate young people in formal and informal settings. Learners will gain an in-depth understanding of the scientific, social, behavioral, and health-related aspects of HIV and AIDS. By the end of the course, learners should understand the links between the factors that drive the pandemic and those that affect people living with HIV and AIDS.
Organization: UNESCO

WEB GAME WITH A MESSAGE DEBUNKS H.I.V. MYTHS
The site, http://www.posornot.com/, introduced in late April, is an H.I.V. education effort disguised as a game.
It shows photographs and brief biographies of men and women ages 21 to 30, and asks visitors to decide whether each is H.I.V. positive or negative.
The message is that you can’t judge someone’s virus status by looks, occupation or taste in music.
What do you think?
